How much does a resin driveway cost?
Real, installed prices for resin bound driveways in Cheshire and the North West — plus what makes your quote go up or down.
Resin bound driveways are the most asked-about surface we install. Homeowners want the seamless, permeable finish — but the first question is almost always the same: how much does it cost?
Hinchliffe pricing reflects a premium, done-once installation. The Hinchliffe Engineered Surface System™ — excavation, an engineered SUDS-compliant Type 3 permeable sub-base, geotextile and UV-stable resin — is typically £240–£280 per m². Our Engineered Resin Overlay System on a structurally sound base is typically £140–£170 per m². We don't compete on cheap quotes — we quote once, properly, so the surface lasts 20+ years.
Every resin price on this page is built on the Hinchliffe Engineered Surface System™ — our engineered driveway build-up designed to BS 7533 principles.

The Hinchliffe Engineered Surface System™ — indicative cost breakdown
Rough allocation of an installed square metre on a full engineered build. Actual splits vary with site conditions, but this is what drives the premium over a cheap install.
| Engineered layer or check | Typical £ / m² | What you're paying for |
|---|---|---|
| Site survey, CAT4 scan & ground engineering report | £10–£15 | Measured survey, utility detection and a written sub-base/drainage strategy — not a guessed depth. |
| Excavation, muck-away & formation prep | £35–£45 | Dig to engineered depth, tipped waste, proof-rolled formation ready to build off. |
| Geotextile separation membrane | £4–£6 | Non-woven geotextile stopping fines migrating up and locking the structure together. |
| Engineered SUDS-compliant Type 3 permeable sub-base | £45–£60 | Open-graded stone placed in correct lifts and compacted to spec — the load-bearing structure. |
| Haunched edge restraints & containment | £15–£25 | Concrete-haunched edges stopping the number-one failure mode: lateral movement. |
| Drainage design, ACO channels & interception | £10–£20 | Falls, cross-falls and channels designed in — water directed, not left to find its own way. |
| Vuba UV-stable resin & premium aggregate | £70–£85 | Manufacturer-approved resin and colour-fast aggregate — the surface you actually see. |
| Trowel-trained resin crew (labour) | £40–£55 | Our own trained crew, not subcontracted day-rate labour. This is where cheap quotes cut. |
| Approvals, insurance & 5-year workmanship guarantee | £11–£19 | Vuba/Brett approvals, full public liability, and a guarantee that actually stands behind the work. |
| Installed total | £240–£280 / m² | Engineered, permeable, guaranteed — built once, properly. |
Cheap quotes almost always strip out the survey, geotextile, engineered sub-base depth, edge restraints or drainage design — and use non-UV resin over sharp sand. That's why they fail within a few winters. Our price reflects what's actually engineered in.
Prices are indicative for 2026 and assume normal access, sound ground conditions and a standard aggregate blend. Complex drainage, steep gradients, remote access or premium colour-fast blends can adjust the final figure. We only quote fixed prices after a free site survey.

What affects resin driveway cost?
Size and shape
Larger areas cost less per m², but irregular shapes, curves and multiple level changes add cutting and labour time.
Existing base condition
A sound base can be overlaid. A failing base needs excavation, muck-away and a new structural sub-base — typically the biggest cost driver.
Access and location
Tight urban drives, long rural lanes and sites far from Sandbach can affect haulage, plant access and crew travel time.
Drainage requirements
SUDS-compliant resin is permeable, but some sites still need linear channels, soakaways or attenuation crates to handle run-off.
Is resin bound worth the cost?
Resin bound is not the cheapest surface, but it is the lowest-maintenance premium finish. There's no sand joints for weeds to take hold, no loose chippings to sweep, and the permeable surface handles Cheshire's heavy rain without puddling or run-off.

Resin driveway cost FAQs
How much does a resin driveway cost per m² in 2026?
The Hinchliffe Engineered Surface System™ — excavation, engineered SUDS-compliant Type 3 permeable sub-base, geotextile and UV-stable resin — is typically £240–£280 per m². Our Engineered Resin Overlay System on a sound, well-draining base is typically £140–£170 per m². Small or complex areas, premium aggregates and difficult access can adjust the figure; every project is surveyed and quoted fixed.
Is resin bound cheaper than block paving or tarmac?
Resin bound is usually more expensive than basic tarmac per m², but comparable to quality block paving once the sub-base is included. The difference is maintenance: resin has no weeds, no loose joints and no pressure-washing needed to keep it clean.
Can you lay resin over an existing driveway?
Yes — if the existing tarmac or concrete is structurally sound and drains well. If the base is cracked, sinking or holding water, overlaying traps the problem underneath and we won't do it. We'll inspect on site and quote the right approach.
What is included in the quoted price?
Every Hinchliffe quote includes site assessment, CAT4 utility scan, excavation (where required), muck-away, geotextile membrane, an engineered structural sub-base designed to suit loading, drainage and existing ground conditions (SUDS-compliant Type 3 permeable stone under resin), drainage design, UV-stable resin bound surfacing, edge detailing and a 5-year workmanship guarantee. No hidden extras.
How long does a resin driveway take to install?
A typical domestic resin driveway takes 5–10 working days end-to-end. The resin itself is usable on foot within 4–6 hours and can take vehicle traffic after 24–48 hours, depending on temperature.
Does resin bound need planning permission?
Usually no. Resin bound is a permeable, SUDS-compliant surface, so front-garden driveways over 5 m² generally don't need planning permission. Exceptions are rare and we'll flag them during the survey.
Why is one quote much cheaper than another?
Cheaper quotes usually mean a thinner sub-base, non-UV resin, no geotextile, or a hand-lay finish over a weak base. Those driveways often fail within a few winters. We quote once, properly, so the surface lasts 20+ years.
Do you offer finance or staged payments?
For most domestic driveways we take a deposit on booking with the balance on practical completion. Larger commercial schemes can be staged against programme milestones — ask during your quote.
What areas do you cover for resin driveways?
We're based in Sandbach and install resin bound driveways across Cheshire and the North West, including Crewe, Nantwich, Knutsford, Congleton, Holmes Chapel, Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Northwich.
How do I get an accurate resin driveway quote?
Call us on 01270 361111 or use the form on this page. We'll arrange a free site assessment, check the ground, measure accurately and send you a fixed written quote — usually within 48 hours of the survey.
Permeable construction, long-term performance & compliance
What is BS 7533 and does it apply to resin driveways?
BS 7533 is the British Standard for structural pavement design. Its principles — correct sub-base, drainage, edge restraint and compaction — apply to any driveway carrying vehicle loads, including resin bound. We engineer every resin drive to those principles so it carries load, sheds water and stays flat.
What is SUDS compliance and why does it matter?
SUDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) means rainwater drains naturally through the surface and sub-base rather than running into the road or sewer. A resin bound drive on a Type 3 permeable sub-base is SUDS-compliant, which avoids puddling and usually removes the need for planning permission.
Will a permeable sub-base stop my driveway sinking?
A correctly engineered permeable sub-base prevents water collecting underneath the surface, which is the main cause of winter freeze-thaw damage and sinking. We combine the Type 3 sub-base with geotextile separation, haunched edges and proper compaction — all to BS 7533 principles.
How long will a properly engineered resin driveway last?
On a correctly engineered base, a resin bound driveway can last 20+ years. The 5-year workmanship guarantee covers the installation; the Vuba system carries manufacturer material warranties on top.
